One thing you may well have to do if you rent a storage unit is to stack things. After all, if you only ever use the floor space you’re wasting a lot of space you could be using to store other things.
Many people use good strong boxes to store their belongings in. This is a good option for more than one reason. For example, the stronger the box is the easier it is to stack. Thin and weak cardboard won’t stand up to having more than a few very light things inside it when you start stacking, which obviously isn’t ideal.
Furthermore, you need to make sure you can actually lift the boxes you are stacking. Some are likely to be heavier than others so always test the weight with your knees bent and back straight before you actually lift it. Don’t assume all the boxes weigh exactly the same!
It is also a good idea to store the heaviest boxes at the bottom of the pile. This means you can reduce the odds of a box squashing the ones below it over time and perhaps even creating a hazard. The last thing you want is a box falling on top of you when you walk into your storage unit to collect or store something.
As you can see, this is really all common sense. Another good example to remember is not to stack things too high. If you need to stretch to reach the top of the pile you’ve probably gone too high. If you need a ladder or step-stool to reach the top that’s fine, but only if you can safely manage a small box without falling.
