If you thought we had a lot of snow here in December 2010 – consider Edmonton in the U.S.A. where they have so much that they have to use storage!
Snow removal crews in Edmonton have already removed over one million cubic metres of snow from their local streets this winter. The snow is scraped off the roads and transported to one of the snow storage facilities on the outskirts of town. One of the town’s four snow storage facilities is already at full capacity with piles of snow 25 metres high!
During the collection of the snow, the plows and scrappers also collect all the sand and grit spread by gritters. Once spring arrives the snow at the storage facility melts, and the sand and grit are left behind to be recycled and reused next winter.
To make sure that Edmonton has enough snow storage facilities in the future they are currently building a fifth facility with a capacity of 500,000 – 600,000 cubic metres of snow.
Just in case you were wondering, snow is one of the few items that you can’t put into self-storage at Lok’nStore. You can store nearly everything else with use though, so give us a call on FreePhone 0800 587 3322 for more information.
