The Man With 250 Spectacles In Storage
I don’t remember where I heard of this strange (but interesting) story about self-storage – this time of hundreds of pairs of spectacles. Maybe I dreamt it! Anyhow the story is that this guy was obsessed with spectacles and he kept the ones he’d had as a kid and as an adult. He only started to wear proper spectacles when he was 45, so most were sunglasses from the early days. He tried to beg a rack that you see in glasses shops from the shops but they’d never give them up, saying that head office wouldn’t allow them to give them away. So he had to make his own racks.
Living in a limited-sized house (as most of us do) he had to move the collection out from the house (strict orders from her indoors?) and so he put the into a small self-storage unit. I wonder if this was in the USA – it’s often the case. He didn’t repair them or wear them, just stored them. And once every so often would go down to the unit at the storage company and add a few new pairs.
